Criminal Justice Court Reform:
- The Smart on Crime Coalition has released a new report and recommendations , presenting a “comprehensive view of the federal government’s role in improving criminal justice systems.” It’s an interesting collection of information and ideas on topics ranging from juvenile justice to re-entry to overcriminalization to innocence. We ran across the project at Informant blog.
- “It’s time to end dismally failed ‘war on drugs,'” according to Jesse Jackson.
Judicial Elections and Election Reform:
- The Brennan Center talks about how census data will aid redistricting and allow citizens to speak out effectively during the process.
- Chicago Public Radio’s This American Life reported on the process by which Cook County judicial candidates are slated by the powerful Democratic Committee in their episode, “Old Boys Network.”
Immigration Court Reform:
- The New York Times reports that Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts has decided the state will not participate in the fingerprint-sharing program called Secure Communities, that is intended as an immigration enforcement mechanism. Gov. Pat Quinn canceled it in Illinois in May and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo suspended New York’s participation last week.
