Judicial Elections and Judiciary Reform:
- Super PACS are already having a significant effect on the 2012 elections, according to the LA Times.
Community Justice:
- President Obama has appointed Richard Cordray to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and many consumer advocates believe that payday lenders should be his first target (.pdf).
- Mayor Emanuel is facing stark criticism for his statement that his proposals aimed at controlling protests around the upcoming G-8 and NATO summits would be permanent, not temporary as he earlier described them: WBEZ, Chicago Tribune, Sun-Times, Progress Illinois and the Chicagoist. The proposal includes substantially raising the fines for resisting or obstructing a police officer, restricting protests to two hours in length, and requiring one parade marshall for every 100 protestors.
